The Intermediate Crew Course

International Competent Crew Certification

This is a 5 day Intermediate Crew Sailing course.  It is a certification for those candidates who wish to become an active crew member on a sailing yacht.

On completion of this course candidates will be able to crew on a sailing vessel up to a maximum length of 78 feet /24 metres in coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore in daylight hours and in fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions.

​

This 5 day course is the minimum level of competence that someone needs either when acting as watch keeping crew on a yacht and as a skipper of a small yacht in protected waters where help is immediately available in calm conditions.  During the course candidates will learn new sailing skills and put them to use on an overnight stay on board the yacht at a nearby tropical Island. 

Prerequisites

Individuals must be physically fit and above 12 years old.

Daily Course Program

Day 1  -  Introduction to Sailing - In Classroom

  • Nautical terminology

  • Safety briefing, personal safety equipment and safety equipment on board.

  • Passage planning, crew rest, duties on watch, personal health

  • Lunch

  • Basic international regulations for preventing collisions at sea.

  • Introduction to weather

  • Basic sail handling, points of sail, tacking and gybing

  • Evening snacks & drinks by the water, by the Sailing School

Day 2  -  Yacht/System Orientation - On Board

 

  • Rope work, common knots used on board, tying up to the dock.

  • Deck gear, sail handling, tacking and gybing,

  • Lunch on board

  • Man overboard procedures

  • Tacking and gybing,

  • Navigation instruments

  • Manoeuvring under power, effects of prop walk and prop wash

  • Crew’s role when berthing and leaving the berth

Day 3  -  Hands-On Sailing Instruction & Exercises - On Board

  • Close quarters manoeuvring and docking, picking up a mooring,

  • Lunch on board

  • Steering a compass course

  • Tacking and gybing

  • Reefing for heavy weather

  • Berthing

Day 4  -  Live-aboard Training Voyage - On Board

​

  • Ready boat

  • Depart the Marina for a sail around local Islands

  • Colregs, compass fixes, introduction to charts, tacking and gybing

  • Sailing drills, anchoring – Koh SiChang, knots, dinghy use

  • Lunch on board

  • Dinner On Shore

 

Day 5  -  Live-aboard Training Voyage & Crew Exams - On Board​

 

  • Breakfast on board

  • Sailing drills students alternating roles, verbal revision for exam

  • Lunch on board

  • Crew Exam onboard

  • Return to the Marina and disperse
